POZ Contributor Blog: Jamie Malerba
PropertyOfZack is excited to welcome back Lo Fidelity’s Jamie Malerba for her fourth Contributor Blog. Last time Jamie checked in, it was just a few weeks after RaleighPalooza, but she’s today to discuss what she learned from the experience six months removed and to let fans know what we can expect from the festival next year. Long time, no talk.
I spent a good portion of my summer alone after RaleighPalooza came to an end on May 5th. Replaying December-May in my head, picking apart each month, each week, each day up until the festival. I still can’t find the words to describe how bringing this dream to reality felt, and continues to feel, driving me to want more of this exciting and ever changing business.
Anyway, I was having trouble on what to write about so I asked some of my friends on Tumblr if they had any ideas. Most of the replies were “What have you learned that you won’t do again?” and “How is next years festival going to be different from this years?” Here we go, I’ll try to keep both short and effective.
I’ve learned more about myself over the last six months then I would have expected. I’ve now learned that when you do business with people, even if you think they are friends, you need to understand and please remember this: they could potentially be dangerous to you and your career. (Also, I know you will read this and get that feeling in the pit of your stomach that it was meant for you, and guess what? It is, but fortunately you haven’t won any more of my money. You’ve won a lifetime of bad karma!)
But really; honesty, conviction, and balls is how I get shit done. If you let what you don’t know stop you from doing your best in any situation you will disappoint yourself over and over and over. You’ve got to be fearless and courageous enough to follow your destiny, whatever it may be.
If you have an idea, write it down and peruse. If you’re scared of failing, get the fuck over yourself. If people think you’re crazy, you’re probably doing something right.
Next year’s festival will be different because I won’t allow bands on the bill that don’t represent myself, my team, or the integrity of RaleighPalooza and independent festivals in a negative way. I’m really going to search and dig for bands who deserve the chance to play on a bill with 40 or 50 other names. Artists with heart will always deliver real value, and that’s all that matters.
